Vast budget cuts to ACE in schools E-mail

While schools and boards are pondering whether to continue with self-funded courses or not PPTA have prepared a document about surplus staffing provisions for these employees (Overview of surplus staffing (redundancy) provisions for employees of ACE in schools).

The response from Minister Anne Tolley about who pays for the redundancy costs is that the boards are the employers and will have to carry those costs!  Previously costs incurred through central decisions have been paid centrally as in school re-organisations - not so now!

Adult and community education (ACE) delivery in about 230 secondary schools continues to engage over 250,000 adult students across NZ each year in a range of courses largely as short ‘evening classes’. A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers Report concludes that ACE makes a significant social and economic contribution to the education sector, to the individual and to the wider community. It says that as the sector is driven by individual and community learning needs the marginal value it creates is substantial. It calculates that each dollar of government generates a return of $16-$22 – and it is also successful in creating a culture of lifelong learning.
