Kua hinga te totara i te wao nui a Tane.
A majestic tree has fallen in the great forest of Tane.
Carmen, truly a Kiwi icon.
Carmen's advocacy of human rights was a class act never to be repeated in our lifetimes. She fought long and hard and with such flair that she could never be ignored.
She worked with the Gay Liberation groups during the 1970’s, but her main focus was on the rights and protection of an even more vulnerable group, the transgender community. Her coffee bar was a refuge for all those who felt harassed and dispossessed.
Her showbiz persona was a wonder to behold. She had so much colour and vibrancy on stage!
PPTA’s Rainbow Taskforce acknowledges her passing and the huge contribution she made to a once marginalised community. She will be remembered.
Thanks Carmen.
