(July 2010) Main points of address to PPTA Maori Teachers Conference 2010. Whanau Ora provides an opportunity for the school whanau to form a supportive network around the school to underpin the role of teachers.
It is difficult for teachers to do as much for their students as they would wish when they often have to deal, for example, with social, health and truancy issues as well.
Whanau Ora aims to strengthen whanau, to harness their potential and to enable them to realise their importance in the educational journey of their children. This is not a task that can be undertaken easily by teachers as it demands time and commitment that can detract from their core teaching role. All schools have many parents and numbers of whom are highly skilled. A small group could establish the support required and determine for themselves, in consultation with staff, the nature of their involvement.
