These secondary teacher study awards, study grants and sabbatical leave positions are professional learning provisions negotiated by the New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) into the Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement (STCA) and the Area School Teachers' Collective Agreement (ASTCA).
Secondary Senior Manager Sabbatical Award (STCA)
A Secondary Senior Manager’s Sabbatical Award is a period of 10 school weeks’ leave available to a senior manager as part of their career pathway. Leave is provided to engage in professional learning activities.

A senior manager is defined as a teacher who holds the position of ‘Assistant Principal’ or ‘Deputy Principal’. These terms are defined by role and not necessarily title. Please see clause 4.3B.2 of the STCA or the award guidelines for further information.
The award recipient receives their normal salary from the school while on leave. The award funds relief costs to the school, in accordance with the STCA, for the duration of sabbatical leave.

Each year there are 100 Study Support Grants available to teachers, in state or state-integrated schools, covered by the Secondary Teachers' Collective Agreement (STCA). Each recipient of the study support grant is entitled to a time allowance of 0.16 FTTE (equivalent to four hours per week), and reimbursement of up to $500 toward their course fees, paid on successful completion of their course. The time allowance is provided to each recipient's school as an additional staffing entitlement.
