Media studies (2009) Media studies curriculum development resources. These resources should be viewed as ‘work-in- progress’, not as finished units to download and use. They demonstrate a range of ways of thinking about how you might build the ‘front end’ of the NZ Curriculum (the Vision, Principles, Values, Key Competencies, Effective Pedagogies and Learning Area Statements) into your existing units of work, by re-focusing how you teach rather than changing what you teach. (April 2009) How to work with this resource: Teachers will need access to the Media Studies teaching and learning guidelines available at http://secondary.tki.org.nz/media_studies and a copy of the New Zealand Curriculum, downloadable from http://nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz/. The Facilitator uses the ‘Questions to interrogate unit’ (see below) and the original unit plan (provided) to work through the original director study unit ‘The world according to Jeunet’. (April 2009) This resource is for use at Curriculum Support Days along with the Facilitator Notes. The intention is that it be issued to teachers prior to issuing of the full resource, to encourage teacher reflection. Authors: Josephine Maplesden and Jane Hall
(April 2009) I chose this unit for a few reasons. It is heavy in critical thinking and combines close reading of media language – symbols, codes etc with readings from societal contexts. Also because it is a director study, that works with the students. It feels a safe place to start to rework. I enjoy teaching Jeunet because he provides a clear and identifiable visual style that challenges and also entertains the students. His cinematography and storylines make up for the barriers some students face with it being foreign films.Authors: Josephine Maplesden and Jane Hall
