New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association / Te Wehengarua (PPTA) advice to secondary teachers regarding the end-of-year and start-of-year dates for pay purposes.
27 January 2012 is the end-of-year date
For most pay purposes 27 January 2012 is the end-of-year date for the 2011 school year and 28 January 2012 the beginning of the next.
If you’re resigning, going on leave without pay (LWOP under Part 6 of your collective agreement) in 2012, or completing a full year’s fixed-term teaching, then holiday pay is paid up to and including 27 January 2012.
(Note 1: Being paid until 27 Jan is dependent on having worked the full school year. Some fixed-term appointees get all holiday pay cashed up in one pay period in December.)
(Note 2: If you are resigning from a permanent position at the end of the 2011 school year you are required to give two months notice. This counts back from 27 January 2012. (see STCA clause 3.11))
Changes to payments for units and allowances, starting (fixed-term or permanent) teaching or resuming teaching, LWOP for 2012, all kick in from 28 January 2012 which is the start of the 2012 school year for pay purposes;
A beginning NZ or new overseas teacher starting teaching in the 2012 school year can be appointed and paid from a date earlier than 28 January but the school must notify payroll.
