Transformation, celebration, liberation: Maori Teachers Conference 2010 E-mail

The 16th PPTA National Maori Teachers’ Conference was held in Rotorua last month at the Sudima Lake Hotel.

About 150 people took part in the annual celebration of Māori secondary education and this year’s themes were transformation, liberation and celebration, consolidating Māori leadership, reclaiming collective space and shared conversations.

Participants took part in two days of political debate, curriculum and cultural workshops and renewing professional relationships.

Workshop themes included Whānau Ora and the role of secondary teachers, introducing the new professional community on Marautanga, Te Reo Māori curriculum in English medium schools, Te Rautaki Māori – NZQA Māori strategy, insights of a practitioner – moving from policy back to the classroom, literacy, Te Ataarangi learning and teaching methods and Te Kotahitanga.

Speakers included Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, Robyn Roa, Te Rita Papesch, Daryn Bean, Marcus Akuhata Brown,

Melanie Riwai-Couch, Nicola Ngarewa, Ako Panuku, Irene Pewhairangi, Moeke Paaka and Johnny Waititi.

Te reo winner thanks whanau

A prestigious speech contest has put Epsom Girls Grammar School in the spotlight for the first time, thanks to Kimiora Kaire-Melbourne.
The 17-year-old won the senior Maori section of the Auckland region Nga Manu Korero speech competition last month.
It is the first time the Epsom school, which has a roll of more than 2000, has won a category in the annual event.

Speaking loud and proud

Being no stranger to the stage doesn't keep the nerves away.
Megan Wilson, 14, is one of 39 students speaking loud and proud at the Nga Manu Korero competition at Manawatu College on Thursday.
Up to 1000 visitors are expected, from around the region, at the annual speech competition.
Megan – from Queen Elizabeth College – loves dancing and singing, and has performed to more than 1000 people in the past.
