COVID-19: Level 2 sick leave provisions for teachers

What should I do if I am in a high risk category?

  • People at higher-risk of severe illness from COVID-19 (eg those with underlying medical conditions, especially if not well-controlled) are encouraged to take additional precautions when leaving home
  • They may work onsite, if they agree with their employer that they can do so safely
  • PPTA advises you to let your principal know if you are in the high risk category and have a conversation with them about any steps that may need to be taken so that you can work safely onsite
  • Please do not hesitate to get in touch with your field officer if you would like support to do this

I am ‘normal’ sick and have sick leave

  • Normal sick leave provisions apply.
  • There is no entitlement to request  disregarded sick leave

I am ‘normal’ sick and have no sick leave left

  • You can request sick leave in advance, or
  • You can apply for discretionary paid sick leave
  • If neither of those options are agreed, you will have to take unpaid sick leave. Please contact your field officer if you are in this situation.

I have Covid-19 and have sick leave

  • You are entitled to paid sick leave.
  • You can apply to have your sick leave disregarded.
  • You will need to provide confirmation of your diagnosis

I have Covid-19 and have no sick leave left

  • You will be paid discretionary sick leave.
  • You will need to provide confirmation of your diagnosis

My dependent is ‘normal’ sick and I have sick leave

  • Normal sick leave provisions apply.
  • There is no entitlement to request  disregarded sick leave

My dependent is ‘normal’ sick and I have no sick leave

  • You can request sick leave in advance, or
  • You can apply for discretionary paid sick leave.
  • If neither of those options are agreed, you will have to take unpaid sick leave. Please contact your field officer if you are in this situation.

My dependent has Covid-19 and I have sick leave

  • You will need to provide confirmation of the diagnosis
  • You are eligible for special paid discretionary leave funded by the Ministry of Education

My dependent has Covid-19 and I have no sick leave left

  • You are entitled to paid discretionary leave
  • You will need to provide confirmation of the diagnosis

I (and /or my dependent) am not sick but must stay home due to possible exposure to Covid-19

  • If you can work from home you will be paid as normal
  • If you cannot work from home you are entitled to special paid discretionary leave funded by the Ministry of Education

I have a dependent in the high risk category and have a medical certificate stating this

  • You are expected to work as normal

I am in the high risk category and have a medical certificate stating this

  • You will need to discuss the possibility of alternative arrangements with your principal
  • If it is agreed that you can work from home you will be paid normally
  • If it is agreed that you can work onsite with flexible working arrangements you will be paid normally
  • If, on medical advice, you cannot return to work or work from home, you can apply for discretionary sick leave funded by your school
  • If that is not agreed you will have to take leave without pay. Please contact your field officer if you are in this situation
