Your pay: end-of-year and start-of-year school dates 2017-18
For most pay purposes 27 January 2018 is the end-of-year date for the 2017 school year and 28 January 2018 the beginning of the next.
If you're resigning, ceasing teaching at the end of the year or completing a full year's fixed-term teaching since January 2017, then holiday pay is paid up to and including 27 January 2018.
Changes to payments for units and allowances, starting (fixed-term or permanent) teaching or resuming teaching, all kick in from 28 January 2018.
If a beginning New Zealand or new overseas teacher is required at school prior to 28 January then that teacher must be paid from that earlier date and the school must notify payroll.
(Note: Being paid until 27 Jan is dependent on having worked the full school year. Some fixed-term appointees get all holiday pay cashed up in one pay period in December.)

3.2A Start of year
3.2A.1 Regardless of the first day schools are open for instruction in Term 1, for normal pay and employment purposes the start of the school year is 28 January for those teachers that are employed for that year, except that for teachers being employed for the first time in a state or integrated school, or being employed after a break in service, their start day is as advised to payroll by the employer.
