Kauhau ki Pukeahu 2004: Waitangi Day March.
"Waiho kia kakati te namu i te wharangi o te pukapuka, ko reira, ka tahuri atu ai"
Our tīpuna were intelligent, agile, astute and brilliant. We do not have to look far for proof of this. Evidence of the intellectual, strategic and political genius of our tīpuna abound. One needs to be in order to navigate the largest ocean in the world and successfully populate it with ‘elite’ Māori. We could reflect on the motivations of Hobson when he came here with his quill. I could talk about the geopolitics of the time, I could talk about the contrasting language of the documents. Perhaps I could talk about He Whakapūtanga, evidence unequivocal that our tīpuna knew exactly what they were signing and what they were not four years later in 1840.
