What is the People’s Select Committee?
In late May 2025, the government rushed through a law change under urgency which axed teachers’ pay equity claim without warning or consultation. Thirty-two other female-dominated professions also had their claims unceremoniously axed. Because the government rushed through the changes under urgency, there was no opportunity for the public to have their voice and perspective heard on the law change.
Shortly after the changes were confirmed, the People’s Select Committee was established by a group of 10 former MPs from across the political spectrum to hear submissions from individuals and groups who were not able to be heard on the Equal Pay Amendment Bill 2025. This will enable adequate scrutiny of the regulatory, economic and social impacts of the Bill through consideration of evidence provided by those directly affected and the public.
What can I do?
PPTA te Wehengarua will be making a submission on behalf of our members, and we want to add your story to our collective submission!
We want to know how you were affected by the axing of the teacher’s pay equity claim - were you involved with the fight for pay equity? Have you been involved in the work on the teachers' pay equity claim? What would pay equity have meant to you as a teacher and a worker? We would love to hear your thoughts.
You can affirm support for the PPTA recommendations and share your story using the form below. Please note that the information you provide may be used for our public advocacy for pay equity.
