Join the Establishing Teachers Committee

The Network of Establishing Teachers is a PPTA network that connects PPTA teachers in their first ten years of practice. It is a diverse network which includes trainee and provisionally-certificated teachers, as well as overseas-trained teachers who are within their first ten years of teaching in New Zealand, and teachers who are working towards middle-leadership roles.

Are you passionate about supporting establishing teachers and shaping the future of the Network of Establishing Teachers? PPTA Te Wehengarua is seeking expressions of interest to fill five vacancies on our Establishing Teachers Committee (ETC).
Successful applicants will serve a two-year term ending 31 December 2027.

You don’t need to hold a PPTA representative role to apply. We encourage any PPTA member in their first 10 years of teaching who is committed to advocating for new and establishing teachers to put their name forward.

  • If you’d like to learn more about the role, please contact our NET Coordinator, Nat Jump njump@ppta.org.nz .

What does the Establishing Teachers Committee do?

The ETC provides a strong, informed voice for early-career teachers — including overseas-trained teachers and provisionally certificated teachers.

The committee meets each school term (4 times a year) for a full-day meeting, with additional gatherings linked to PPTA events such as Annual Conference and the Issues and Organising Seminar.
All relief and travel costs for ETC activities are covered by PPTA Te Wehengarua.

The committee’s work includes:

  • Advising Executive, branches, and members on issues affecting early-career teachers
  • Influencing policy and practice to improve conditions for new teachers

  • Collaborating with other organisations to advance PPTA goals

  • Reporting regularly to Annual Conference

  • Organising events such as the biennial NETs Conference and caucus meetings

Who can apply?

To be eligible for a position on the ETC, you must:

  • Be a current PPTA Te Wehengarua member

  • Be in your first 10 years of teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand (including newly arrived overseas-trained teachers, student and beginning teachers)

  • Be able to secure release from your school to attend meetings

  • Demonstrate interest in NETs or early-career teacher issues — for example, being part of the NETs network, serving as a regional NETs rep, or contributing to NET-related work in your school

The PPTA President and General Secretary will review all self-nominations and appoint members who can make the strongest contribution to the committee. We aim for the ETC to represent the full diversity of our network, so the selection process considers a range of factors such as where members are based, the types of schools they teach in, their teaching experience, involvement with PPTA, and the varied identities and backgrounds that strengthen our collective.
