Kaihautū Māori Vacancy
We are seeking a kaupapa Māori leader to strengthen our advocacy for Māori kaiako and the rights, wellbeing and educational success of rangatahi Māori across secondary education in Aotearoa.
As a Tiriti-led organisation, we work collectively to transform the education system, challenge inequities, and advance culturally sustaining schooling that meets the needs and aspirations of ākonga Māori.

This is a high-level role within our professional team.
Alongside strong policy and system analysis, the focus is on kaupapa Māori leadership that helps maintain strategic coherence across our Māori structures and expectations and builds collective effectiveness so our advocacy is strong, grounded, and consistent.
You will work closely with members to gather Māori member voice and translate that insight into influential advocacy (including submissions, consultation, and high-quality advice). You will also work confidently across both te ao Māori and PPTA union systems, navigating complex relationships and supporting the leadership and staff of the union to lift our impact for Māori learners and teachers. Your communication skills in person, via email, Teams are exemplary.
The position carries responsibility for key kaupapa Māori work, including leadership of the Māori Teachers’ Conference and supporting Ngā Manu Kōrero. You will work collaboratively alongside the wider professional team and in close partnership with the Kaihautū Māori within the industrial team, while actively supporting PPTA Te Wehengarua’s Māori governance structures, including Te Huarahi and our kaumātua.
The successful candidate will be a fluent speaker of te reo Māori with a strong working understanding of tikanga Māori and will bring the relational integrity and strategic capability to strengthen Māori collective leadership within the organisation.
The position is permanent full-time and based in Wellington/ Te Whanganui-a-Tara. It requires travel and occasional weekend work. A flexible working policy is in place for staff; presence at the Wellington office is expected every week and on required anchor days.
The salary range is comparable to that paid to senior positions in secondary schools.
